Meet The Eternally Fashionable Slipper Chair
Known for its armless design, low seat height and sleek profile, slipper chairs are a stylish and functional addition to any living space.
At Beaumont & Fletcher, we have two signature designs, which, perhaps given their versatility, are some of the most popular pieces in our collection of bespoke chairs. They are design classics in every sense of the word.
The history of the slipper chair
As the name hints, the slipper chair is believed to have originated in the Victorian era from its use in ladies’ boudoirs for sitting while putting on their slippers or shoes. It was seen as a practical and elegant solution for women’s dressing rooms, its low seat making it easier for women to sit on comfortably while donning elaborate dresses and shoes.
Over time, the classic design moved beyond the bedroom to become a popular choice in living rooms, while these days, the slipper chair can be found in almost any room requiring a compact, versatile piece of furniture.
Signature design
One of the defining features of the slipper chair is its armless structure. This design not only saves space but provides a minimalist aesthetic that complements modern and contemporary interiors. The low seat height typically adds to its accessibility and comfort, making it an excellent option for seating in small spaces or for adding a chic touch to a room without overwhelming it.
The chair’s backrest is usually high and slightly angled, providing adequate support and comfort despite the absence of armrests. This makes slipper chairs ideal for lounging, reading, or even as an accent piece.
Beaumont & Fletcher’s Milo slipper chair adopts a very typical design, while Lydia is ever so slightly higher and has the addition of a plump seat cushion, offering superior comfort. Because each chair is custom made to order, it can be upholstered in any fabric from our collection or in a customer’s own material.
For a luxurious touch, our customers often choose our exquisite silk velvet, which has the most beautiful sheen, while others opt for one of our elegant linens, for a more relaxed look.
Made entirely by hand in our English workshop, each bespoke slipper chair can be fully customised with decorative nailings, wood finishes, contrasting piping, fringes or skirts.
Versatility and practicality
Slipper chairs can be used as accent chairs in a living room, paired with a small table in a reading nook, or placed in a bedroom corner to create a cozy seating area. Their compact size and stylish design make them a perfect fit for apartments and smaller homes where space is at a premium. And they can be easily moved and rearranged, offering flexibility in changing the layout of a room.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, slipper chairs are highly practical. Their armless design allows for ease of movement, making them an excellent choice for dining areas or as extra seating for guests. In commercial settings, such as waiting rooms or hotel lobbies, slipper chairs provide a comfortable yet stylish seating option that can withstand frequent use.
Choosing a slipper chair
When selecting a slipper chair, it’s important to consider the overall design and colour scheme of the room. A bold, patterned fabric, such as Beaumont & Fletcher’s Kyma, can make the chair a focal point, while a neutral tone might help it blend into the existing decor.
Comfort is another crucial factor. While slipper chairs are generally comfortable due to their cushioned seats and supportive backs, the level of firmness and the quality of the upholstery can vary. It’s advisable to try out different options to find the perfect balance of style and comfort.
Timeless design
The enduring style of the slipper chair makes it a worthwhile investment for your home as a piece of furniture that will never go out of fashion. And perhaps makes it even more important to buy a quality piece that will truly stand the test of time.
Beaumont & Fletcher’s collection of bespoke chairs are handcrafted from the finest, natural materials for longevity.
