Why the Club Chair is a design classic

The club chair is a staple in the realm of furniture design. Originating in early 20th century France, the “fauteuil confortable” as it was initially known, quickly became synonymous with luxury and comfort. Its name derives from the exclusive gentlemen’s clubs in which it was frequently found, offering members a plush seat to relax and converse.

The original club chairs were characterized by their low backs, deep seats, and substantial armrests, providing a sense of enclosure and support. Typically upholstered in leather, they exuded sophistication and durability, which were essential qualities for the high-end clubs and homes they adorned.

Since then, the design of the club chair has evolved, to embrace various styles and materials. At Beaumont & Fletcher we have a wide range to choose from, all of which showcase the key characteristics of this classic design in some shape or form.

Milton, Howard, Boswell, Brooke and Marlborough are examples of this broad, deep seat and low back, which prioritises a relaxed seating posture. The armrests are wide and well-padded, contributing to the chair’s enveloping feel.

The aesthetic of a classic club chair is typically one of understated elegance. Clean lines and a lack of excessive ornamentation allow the quality of the materials and the form of the chair to shine. That said, we often incorporate decorative nailing for a sophisticated touch.

When it comes to the construction, a club chair should be a robust piece, with a sturdy frame and superior upholstery. At Beaumont & Fletcher quality always comes first. We use seasoned beechwood for the frame, which is screwed, glued and dowelled into place for durability. The legs are part of the frame itself โ€“ not simply screwed into place at the end.

The highest quality English webbing is meticulously stretched and nailed to the frame, before steel coils are individually tied by hand for lasting tension and comfort. And the frame is traditionally upholstered with cotton, lambswool and horsehair, while cushions are filled with your choice of the highest grade feather and down mix or a foam/feather wrap.

As for upholstery, the decision comes down to personal taste. The classic club chair was always upholstered in the finest leather, but these days, anything goes โ€“ from an understated linen to the softest wool.

Velvet is another hugely popular choice, especially rich, opulent colours. At the lower end of the budget a cotton velvet is a beautiful choice. But if youโ€™re looking for something truly special, a silk velvet, such as our very own Capri, can turn a club chair into something truly spectacular.

Since it first made its appearance in the 20th century, the club chair has transcended its origins to become a versatile piece of furniture in various interior design contexts. Whether in a traditional library, a modern living room, or a chic office, the club chair adapts to its surroundings while adding a touch of class.

In contemporary design, the club chair continues to evolve. And it still very much has it place in the exclusive private members clubs in cities around the world.

It is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a testament to the evolution of design and the enduring appeal of comfort and style. From its origins to its place in contemporary homes and offices, the club chair has maintained its status as an icon of sophistication. Its adaptability to various design trends and personal preferences ensures that it will continue to be a beloved fixture in interior design for years to come.
