Both are versatile fabrics that complement a variety of styles. Whether used to upholster an antique armchair or modern sofa, or as curtains or accent cushions, they add a touch of indulgence to any setting.

The history of silk velvet

Silk velvet traces back to ancient times, where silk was first cultivated in China over 5,000 years ago. Initially reserved for royalty and nobility, silk quickly became a symbol of wealth and prestige, and while it is far more accessible today, it still evokes the same sense of luxury.

As trade routes expanded, silk and velvet found their way to Europe, where they became prized commodities. During the Renaissance period, cities like Venice and Florence became centres of velvet production, crafting the most exquisite fabrics.

Craftsmanship and artistry

Silk velvet has a smoother, more lustrous texture compared to most other velvets, and rich, vibrant colours that add depth and dimension to furniture. While it is more expensive than a standard velvet due to the quality of the silk fibres and intricate manufacturing process, the luxurious look and feel of silk velvet justifies the cost for many homeowners and interior designers.

Silk threads are woven into a dense pile fabric, with each loop carefully cut to create the plush surface characteristic of velvet. And the weaving process itself demands precision and skill to help navigate the complexities of tension, pile height and direction.

This unique ability to transform in different lighting makes it important to look at samples in situ –  even moving from one area of a room to another, where the light is slightly different, can appear to change the colour.

The quality of silk velvet can vary depending on various factors including the type of silk used, the manufacturing process, and the expertise of the producers. Some regions are renowned for producing high-quality silk, which in turn can result in superior silk velvet.

Italy has a long history of producing luxurious textiles, including silk velvet, and this is where we weave Como and Capri. Italian silk velvet is prized for its superior quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail, which is apparent in our own collection.

Caring for silk velvet

Silk velvet’s adaptability extends beyond its aesthetic appeal. While it exudes sophistication, it is also remarkably durable when properly cared for. With its inherent strength and resistance to wrinkles, silk velvet stands the test of time, becoming even more luxurious with age.

That said, silk fibres are delicate and must be protected from abrasion, sunlight, and spills.

Regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment can help remove dust and debris. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth to prevent staining, while professional cleaning may be necessary for more stubborn stains.
